Campbell Fellowship for Transformative Research on Women in the Developing World, 2016

Vera R. Campbell Foundation is offering one six- or nine-month residential fellowship for a female doctoral level scholar to write her book. Women scholars from any nation are eligible to apply, SAR particularly welcomes and encourages applications from scholars in developing countries. Fellows receive a $4,500/month stipend in addition to housing and office space on the SAR campus. The application deadline is November 1.

Eligibility:
-One six- or nine-month residential fellowship is available for a female doctoral level scholar whose research both documents the circumstances of women in the developing world and offers paths to concrete, practical strategies for improving their health, prosperity, and general well-being.
-The successful applicant for this fellowship will have, by the application deadline, completed a doctorate in anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, political science, psychology, sociology, or in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates two or more of these disciplines.
-Sample topics include education and socialization of girls; women’s roles in government; reproduction and women’s health; impacts of international and civil conflict on women; women’s roles in resolving conflicts or sustaining civil society; the practice and process of gender-based development; and women in science and technology.
-Applicants should provide compelling evidence of originality of thought, an ability to engage real-world problems, and skill at communicating ideas effectively to professional audiences and the general public. Although women scholars from any nation are eligible to apply, SAR particularly welcomes and encourages applications from scholars in developing countries. All data collection should be completed prior to the start of the fellowship and applicants must demonstrate fluency in English.

The applicant’s research must both document the circumstances of women in the developing world and offer paths to concrete, practical strategies for improving their health, prosperity, and general well-being.

Duration of award(s): The Campbell Fellowship will be six to nine months long.
What does it cover? Fellows receive a $4,500/month stipend in addition to housing and office space on the SAR campus. This fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the Vera R. Campbell Foundation.
Selection Criteria: Fellowships are awarded competitively based on evaluations by a specially convened panel of external reviewers who represent a broad spectrum of intellectual expertise. Composition of the panel changes each year. The program supports scholars whose work is broad, synthetic, and interdisciplinary and promises to yield significant advances in understanding human culture, behavior, evolution, or critical contemporary issues. Projects that are narrowly focused geographically and theoretically or that are primarily methodological seldom receive strong consideration. Each year the program supports a mix of social science and humanities oriented scholars. Preference is given to applicants whose research and analysis are complete and who need time to prepare manuscripts or dissertations. Applicants for doctoral level fellowships must have their PhD in hand at time of application.
How to Apply: All application materials must be submitted through the online application system. E-mailed, mailed, or faxed application materials, including letters of recommendation, will not be accepted. Supplementary materials will not be considered. In fairness to all applicants, we do not grant on- or off-campus interviews. Online applications will be accepted from September 1 through the first Monday in November each year. Only fully completed applications that adhere to SAR’s guidelines and deadlines will be considered. All proposal components should be in 12-point type with at least 1-inch margins on all sides. Applicants must create an account on the online application system before materials can be uploaded for submission. All applications must include:
-An abstract, not to exceed 150 words, describing the purpose and goals of the project.
-A proposal, no more than four double-spaced pages in length, describing the research project, key questions to be addressed, methodologies, and significance. The proposal should also explain what is to be accomplished during the fellowship year and the status of the applicant’s research on the topic.
-A short bibliography, not to exceed one single-spaced page, of references cited in the proposal.
-A curriculum vitae, not to exceed four single-spaced pages.
-Three letters of recommendation, not to exceed two pages in length each. Letters must be requested and submitted through the online application process and uploaded by the application deadline. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that references send their letters on time. Additional reference checks may be conducted for finalists.

PhD Scholarships for International Students in Rice Value Chains at Africa Rice Center in Africa, 2013

African Development Bank is funding ten PhD Scholarships at Africa Rice Center in Africa. PhD scholarship is available for international students but preference is given to students enrolled in any reputable African university. Scholarship is awarded in rice value chain, in the field of agronomy, mechanization, gender, agribusiness, marketing or any other related field. Scholarship covers stipend, research costs, tuition, travel and insurance. Application deadline is 31 July 2013.

Eligibility: The scholarships are open to nationals from any country.
- Strong preference is given to candidates that are enrolled in any reputable African university.
- Candidates must satisfy the target university’s admission requirements for PhD studies.
- Candidates must have identified a supervisory Professor at a reputable University, who must have agreed to the research proposal written by the applicant.
- Strong preference is given to PhD candidates already enrolled in a University, and which have finished all or most of the coursework requirements.
Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Open to nationals from any country but strong preference is given to candidates that are enrolled in any reputable African university.
Scholarship Description: The International Institute of Tropical Agricultural (IITA) and its partners Africa Rice and the International Center for Agricultural Research for the Dry Areas (ICARDA) have received a grant of about US$ 64 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the project “Support to Agricultural Research for development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD-SC)”. The strategic crops within the context of the project are cassava, maize, rice and wheat. The overall objective of SARD-SC is to enhance food and nutrition and contribute to poverty reduction in AfDB’s low-income member Countries (RMCs). Its specific objective is to enhance the productivity and income of four CAADP’s priority value chains (cassava, maize, rice and wheat) on a sustainable basis. Under this project, the AfDB has made a contribution to Africa Rice to implement a 5-year project, which aims to upgrade the rice value chain in Africa through the (i) generation of agricultural technologies and innovations; (ii) sustainable dissemination and adoption of agricultural technologies and innovations across the value chain; and (iii) sustainable capacity strengthening of project stakeholders.
